A William Tubby Masterwork in New Canaan

William B. Tubby’s numerous architectural achievements, created between the years he founded his own firm in 1883 and retired in 1942, have made a lasting impression. Known for his work throughout New York City as well as other areas of the Northeast including New Canaan and Greenwich, Connecticut, Tubby is highly regarded for his designs in the Dutch Revival, Romanesque and Renaissance Revival styles. Some of his notable works include the home of Charles M. Pratt, son of the founder of Pratt Institute, buildings on the Pratt campus including the well-known library, Queen Anne and Dutch Revival homes built for two Brooklyn mayors, the municipal building Waveny House in New Canaan, and the historic Dunnellen Hall in Greenwich. Tubby also designed churches, banks and hospitals throughout his career, as well as some grand estates.

One of these larger architectural masterpieces is Wexford Hall, located at 544 Oenoke Ridge in New Canaan,Connecticut, and now on the market with William Pitt Sotheby’s International Realty for $8,000,000. Boasting an expansive interior of 18,500 square feet, the eight-bedroom, nine full and three half-bath home is breathtaking inside and out. The Tudor-style, slate-roofed home was constructed later in Tubby’s career in 1929 and retains many of its original details, even in the home’s exceptional new addition. Interior features of note throughout the home’s 25 rooms include 10 fireplaces with one in the master bedroom, hardwood flooring, living areas with high ceilings, a beautiful kitchen with island, library, porch, central air and security system.

The 6.25 acres of manicured grounds exude a level of luxury befitting this spectacular residence, considered one of Connecticut’s great estate homes. With gardens, deck and patio areas, and an enclosed courtyard, the property enjoys a corner lot in a country club community, complementing that country club lifestyle with an indoor golf range. The retreat has the added benefit of a location less than one hour from Manhattan via the Metro-North train. The property hosts several out buildings including a three-bedroom guest house, charming carriage house, and a detached garage for over five cars, and also offers a stunning outdoor swimming pool.
